KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – Nepal has estimated that rebuilding after the August 26 Bhote Koshi floods will require about $4.78 billion. The government’s Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment places direct physical damage at roughly $1.8 billion. It also calculates economic losses of about $883 million. The review covers social services, productive sectors and major infrastructure. Flooding hit Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and other areas along the river system, damaging homes, roads, bridges and energy facilities.
The government expects short-term recovery and reconstruction needs to reach about $57.67 million during the next six months. Longer-term rebuilding accounts for approximately $4.71 billion of the total requirement. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said authorities have circulated the rapid assessment among relevant agencies. A wider Post Disaster Needs Assessment remains in progress. That review will provide a more detailed measure of losses and recovery needs. Restoration work is continuing across transport, electricity and telecommunications networks in flood-affected districts.
Initial government figures show extensive damage to communities and public infrastructure. About 7,570 homes suffered damage, affecting roughly 32,933 people. Authorities also recorded impacts to 48 government offices. Floodwaters damaged about 55 kilometers of roads, 37 motorable bridges and 68 suspension bridges. Around 1,806 hectares of agricultural land also sustained losses. Energy infrastructure suffered major disruption, including damage to 13 hydropower projects, one solar plant and two transmission lines.
Floods disrupt transport and power systems
The disaster affected about 783 megawatts of hydropower generation capacity, according to government assessments. Damaged roads and bridges also restricted access to several communities. Authorities have continued clearing routes and restoring essential transport links. An Acrow bridge over the Tadi River at Devighat has opened for public use after installation. Government teams have also worked to remove debris and reopen blocked roads. Nepal has used domestic resources while receiving international support for emergency response and recovery operations.
Search and rescue work has continued alongside infrastructure repairs. By September 11, authorities had rescued 13,676 people, including more than 320 foreign nationals. Officials still listed about 5,130 people as missing, including roughly 600 foreigners from around 35 countries. Recovery teams had found 1,385 bodies. Authorities said casualty and missing-person figures could change as identification work continued. Forensic specialists have assisted Nepal Police and other agencies with DNA collection, analysis and identification of recovered remains.
Reconstruction estimate guides wider recovery assessment
Debris removal has become another major part of the recovery effort. The United Nations Development Programme estimated at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris in the areas it assessed. Its preliminary review found that 11 hydropower stations and one solar facility had stopped operating. Those sites represented a combined capacity of 431.1 megawatts. The assessment also recorded damage to 15 power projects under construction. Those projects had a planned combined capacity of 470 megawatts.
The $4.78 billion figure remains Nepal’s main official estimate for reconstruction while the detailed national assessment continues. Authorities are still conducting search operations, restoring infrastructure and delivering relief to affected communities. The government has also sought specialized equipment for recovery work. Requested items include drones, bridge systems, testing kits and pumping equipment. Officials say the broader assessment will establish the full scale of damage, economic losses and rebuilding requirements after one of Nepal’s most destructive recent flood emergencies.
